My Journey with Integrative Medicine and Holistic Wellness Center
It all began on May 10th 2013, when I went for a walk, returned home...sat for awhile then tried to get up, I had a difficult time, my right leg was in a great deal of pain. I had been getting some discomfort for several weeks and blamed it on other things. There was no ignoring the pain that day.
Saturday morning showed no improvement...my husband suggested that I go to a Walk In Clinic, which I finally agreed to. Their suggestion was to go to the Emergency Room, have an X-ray and Ultrasound. Their findings; I had a Baker's Cyst; their directions were to 'go home; ice it, take Aleve and call my doctor on Monday".
The pain become more intense, I wasn't able to put any weight on my foot or walk. I tried crutches, a walker and even crawled. I decided to call an Orthopedic doctor and I begged them to see me that day, which they did. More X-rays...,yes they did see the Backer's Cyst, but didn't think that this was what was causing so much pain. Next step was an x-ray of my hip, which proved negative. Finally they decided it was probably coming from my back and wanted me to have an MRI. They sent me home with a prescription for Vicodin & Prednisone, I told I would not take them, because I am hypersensitive to most drugs. Expecting to here from them the next day, (Tuesday) regarding when I was scheduled for the MRI, they never called. At this point my sister borrowed a walker with four wheels and a seat, so that I could at least get around using it like a wheelchair. I called Shields Health Care Group, to ask if they had received an order for my MRI. They reply; "no, call the doctors office", which I did. Their reply was, "the doctor hadn't done the transcription yet". I felt frustration and helpless.
It is now Wednesday and I am only getting worse. The pain is like nothing I have ever experienced before, I try Tylenol, no relief. My son made a suggestion that maybe I should try acupuncture...great idea. This is when I finally took my care into my own hands and called the Integrative Medicine and Holistic Wellness Center. My journey with them began when the voice on the other end of the phone was so kind, gentle and caring. She made an appointment for me that very same day to see Antonio DaSilva for acupuncture. Finally I had hopes of some relief.
Just walking... I mean being pushed, into that entrance in the walker, (that I was using as a wheelchair), made me fell calmer. Dr. Deborah Leveen approached me first, with a concerned greeting and asked me to come into her office, so we could talk a little about my situation. Her suggestion was that I combine the acupuncture along with Chiropractic treatments, with Dr. Ryan Casagranda, better know as Dr. Cas., I agreed to this and made one of the best decision in my life, and that is no exaggeration.
The day after my first treatments I started to feel a slight improvement. This was so encouraging, at least it was going in the right direction.
I had three treatments that week and the improvement and relief of pain was unbelievable. This all happened before I even had the MRI. I finally received a phone call on Friday evening from Shields to schedule The MRI. I went the next morning at 8 A.M, May 18th.
Up to this date nothing happened with the Orthopedic doctor, since they told me that I wouldn't hear from them until my next appointment on June 3rd...unless they found something that need immediate attention. I guess what they saw didn't fall into that category.
I continued my treatments three times that following week. When I received my written results from the MRI, I brought them in for Dr. Cas to review. Just as he suspected, I had two vertebra and nerves that fused together and a bulging disc along with a pinched nerve. It was no surprise to him why I was in so much pain. His treatments went according to my improvement, gentle and cautious at first, then a little more aggressive as I improved.
The following week, I had progressed even more...no more walker, just a limp and much less pain.
The week after that, I had no limp and absolutely no pain.
I saw the Orthopedic doctor on June 3rd, as scheduled. He asked how I was feeling. When I told him how good I felt, He assumed that the drugs had done their job. I was happy to tell him that they did not do the job. I chose a more holistic method and went to the Integrative Medicine and Holistic Wellness Center, had acupuncture and chriropractic treatments... all without the drugs.
I can't say enough about everyone at the Wellness Center, they were all so compassionate and caring, from the receptionist, to that wonderful Doctor Casagranda and his assistants, Antonio DaSilva for his gentle voice and acupuncture and Dr. Deborah Leveen for heading me in the right direction. I would still be in pain and immobile if it wasn't for the discovery of the Wellness Center.
My next venture with them is eating better, loosing weight and taking advantage of all the other wonderful healthy amenities they have to offer and getting back to my active life, PAIN FREE!
Thank You, Thank You, I can't say that enough.
